Oreo Balls are Yummy!
Oreos. We love these cookies at my house. A stack of Oreos with a glass of milk is one of my kids favorite treats. Oh who am I kidding? That's one of my husband's and my favorite treats too. What's not to like about two chocolate cookies with frosting in the middle? What could you do to improve upon that? Well they have tried lots of ways to expand the Oreo. There are different frostings - mint, strawberry, cake batter, chocolate, peppermint and more. They have covered them in fudge. They even made a vanilla Oreo cookie. The Oreo section at the store just gets bigger. The other day I saw firework Oreos. They have pop rocks in the frosting!
We have a favorite Oreo treat at our house. They are called Oreo Balls and they are "little balls of heaven!" (That is an actual quote from someone after eating one of these yummy treats at luncheon I was asked to bring a dessert to.) We don't have them a lot so that makes them even more special when we do have them. They are usually my go to treat to take to people around the holidays. We do have them a few times a year and we decided that it was about time to have them again. It's an easy recipe - only three ingredients. However they do take time because you have to freeze them 1/2 way thru making them. Here's the easy, yummy recipe!
Oreo Balls
1 package of regular Oreo cookies
1 package of cream cheese (any kind - even fat free)
1 package of vanilla Almond Bark
Put all of the cookies into a food processor and pulse into fine crumbs. (You can also put them in a large freezer bag and crush with a rolling pin.) Then mix the crumbs with the cream cheese. Make sure that they are mixed thoroughly.
Then make into small 1 inch balls. I use an extra small cookie scoop. Put them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze until solid. (You have to freeze them before dunking in the melted almond bark or else they just fall apart.)
After they are frozen, melt the Almond Bark. You can either do it on the stove top stirring constantly or else in the microwave. In the microwave only do 30 seconds at a time, stirring each time. When it is completely melted, insert a sturdy toothpick or bamboo skewer into an Oreo ball. Carefully dunk it in the melted Almond Bark. Let the excess bark drip off. Place it back onto the parchment paper. (Use another toothpick to hold the ball in place while you pull out the first toothpick.) Repeat until all are covered.
We usually put sprinkles on top. You have to do this immediately because the bark sets up very quickly. Sometimes we tint the left over Almond Bark and then just drizzle it over the plain white balls.
It makes approximately 48 balls. Store them in the refrigerator.
These yummy balls make great gifts too. Just package them in storage containers. Add a bow and your set!
